Why Site Visits Are Crucial

Jessica Zimmerman | Business Education Blog | Cheesecloth | Outdoor Setting

When I'm first hired to design an event, the very first thing I do is make a site visit. I can't do anything until I've seen the space with my own two eyes. So much depends on the space!

For this wedding, when I saw the farmland and particularly this garden with its wide walkways, I knew we had to set up long tables in the walkways and serve dinner family style. The wooden posts in the garden were begging to be strung with cafe lights. It wasn't hard to convince the client to let me use a color palette inspired by what would be growing in the garden at the time of the event. I used a combination of floral arrangements along with potted plants and herbs to keep everything cohesive. But you want to know my most favorite part of the decor? Instead of using an expensive table linen or a pricey hand-dyed runner, I purchased cheesecloths for around $20 each and draped them across the center of the tables. A cheesecloth just felt right in this farm setting.

(Sidenote: since I did this wedding, the vendor is now making them in every color and size available! Just go to Etsy and search "cheesecloth table runner").

This wedding is featured on Once Wed. It was photographed by two of my favorites BJ Matthews and Erin Wilson along with gorgeous paper details from Brown Linen.
